A Powerful Memory Tool for Creating Leads
Those familiar with the seven
major scale "modes" know they can be used to create different lead
sounds (eg. "Spanish", pop, soul/blues, pure minor, etc.).
The problem is learning how to easily find, play and mix these scales
over chords and progressions...
And that's where the CAGGED sequence comes
in. It makes switching scale forms over chords to get
different modal sounds a breeze...
How Does CAGGED Work?
Each of the five basic "chord forms" (C-A-G-E-D)
has an associated scale form. "CAGGED" refers to a modulating sequence
of these five basic scale forms. When two of the scale forms are
doubled according to a certain rule, a sequence is created that reveals
exactly what scale form to play over a chord form to achieve a
characteristic I through VII "modal" sound.
The rule of doubling is simple: any
scale form used to evoke a modal sound a half-tone step from the next
mode, will double to play both. In practice, this means doubling forms
to play the III-IV and VI-I modes...
The diagram on the right illustrates the "C-Root"

Matching scale-forms
over chord forms using CAGGED is as easy as following the
sequence. Suppose we're playing a C-form chord and we want a
III mode "Phrygian" Spanish sound over it? Just use the C-Root CAGGED
sequence. It quickly tells us that we can use a G-form scale over the
C-form chord (C-Root: C-A-G...) to produce a III
mode "Spanish" sound...
